What Fathers and Mothers Say About Child Support

By Frank Furstenberg, Jr., Kay Sherwood, Mercer Sullivan

This report explores the circumstances and opinions of 71 parents who were interviewed to help inform the Parents’ Fair Share Demonstration, which tackled a social problem highly associated with child poverty in the United States: the failure of noncustodial parents — most of whom are fathers — to contribute financially to their children’s support. Parents’ Fair Share was the first national demonstration project aimed at increasing the child support payments, employment and earnings, and parental involvement of noncustodial fathers with children receiving welfare.
