The College Match Program: Helping Low-Income, College-Ready Students Make Good College Choices

Much attention is being paid to low-income, college-ready students who are “undermatching” — enrolling in colleges for which they are academically overqualified or not going to college at all. A number of “light touch” informational interventions targeting the top 15 percent of standardized test-takers appear effective at getting these students to attend selective colleges.

In this four-minute video, MDRC’s Crystal Byndloss describes the College Match pilot in Chicago and NYC — two of the nation’s largest urban school districts — which offers even B-level students and their families the kind of in-depth “personal touch” advising that could make a difference in helping them choose more selective colleges.
